Run Faster, Jump Higher: A Guide To Losing Weight

By James T. Chaweng

Losing weight and keeping it off are often two very different things. Many people find it easy to lose weight but find that it comes right back when they are done with their diet. You need to follow the tips below to change your habits rather than going on a diet.

If you're trying to lose weight, a balanced vegetarian diet may be an option for you. Some people find that a vegetarian diet forces them to make healthier choices during meal times. However, beware of consuming too many carbohydrates! Keep your pasta and bread intake moderate, otherwise you'll miss out on the benefits of a vegetarian diet.

If you are home-based, it can be a challenge to lose weight. However, you can and should build as much activity as possible into your day. The reason to do so is that it will get your metabolism up and running much more than if you are just vegging out in front of the computer or the TV. Try to do things more inefficiently, if that makes sense. Instead of trying to combine everything you're carrying down to the basement, stagger it so you're making several trips up and down those stairs. Each trip burns calories, helps keep you fit, and keeps your engine running a little faster.

A great way to help you lose weight is to change the way you think about yourself. If you're overweight, you might think negatively about yourself, and that can sabotage any efforts that you make when trying to lose weight. Thinking positively about yourself is key in changing your lifestyle.

Juice: who doesn't like it? It's the sugary, delicious sweet part of the fruit. However, people interested in losing weight might want to cut out the juice. Although derived from natural fruits, most juices have no fiber and little to offer nutritionally in the way of vitamins, with the exception of the high levels of vitamin C found in orange juice. Tomato and V-8 juice fare somewhat better, and are very low-calorie to boot, but both are loaded with salt. So if you want to lose weight, either skip your morning juice in favor of morning tea or coffee, or choose one of the reduced-calorie "healthy choices" juices now on the market. You'll still get that sweet-tart taste without all the calories.

You may need to replenish your dishes. Most of us have dishes, plates and bowls, that are much bigger than what a true serving size should be. A healthy dinner for an adult should fit onto a 9 inch plate. The larger the plate, the more likely you are to fill it up, over the amount that you really should be consuming.

A useful tip for anyone attempting to lose weight is to avoid relying on processed foods that boast about being fat free. It is often the case that in order to remove the fat from such products manufacturers add extra sugar so that the items have a pleasing taste. This generally results in additional calories, often in excess of those contained in the regular, full fat versions of the same product. Those extra calories only serve to hinder weight loss efforts.

Stop being such a couch potato! If you are an avid TV watcher, try to cut your couch time in half to help lose weight. When you watch TV, you are more inclined to snack, and you are not burning many calories. If you can't cut your ties to the small screen just yet, try doing crunches or jumping-jacks while you watch. That way, you are being productive and entertained at the same time.

Change up your weight loss routine to have new-found success. Weight loss no longer needs to be just a dream.
