By Eloise Hewitt

Nowadays, professional wrestling is equal to the most popular franchise known as the WWE or sometimes even the less known version which is known as TNA. Now although many people refer to this art as a form of entertainment nowadays, many people probably are not aware that this art has been used to kill people in olden times. Now if one is interested in how this art form evolved, he should take a look at the history of professional wrestling.

Now every culture would have their own form of wrestling as each of them needed it for when they would go to war without any weapons. Now this became a very significant part of everyday life that sometimes they would pit people together in a ring for grappling contests. Now this was a freestyle form that would involve any type of damaging hit.

Now the earliest form of this art was probably dated back to the time of the ancient Greeks. Their form of grappling was known as Pankration which they used in order to destroy their enemies when their swords or spears were taken away from them. The Spartans were exceptionally good at this art as they were already trained at very young ages.

Another country that was really popular for their grappling techniques was none other than China. Although most people see the fighting arts of China only as those flashy Jackie Chan moves that is called Kung Fu, China also had their own form of practical combat arts. This was used to finish off the enemies during the wars just in case they did not carry weapons.

Now the Chinese called their form of grappling Shuai Jiao and this art had a lot of take downs so that they could bring their opponent to the ground in an instant. Now the modern version of this art is now known as Xanda and has been made into a popular sport. Nowadays, Xanda is like a mixture of Shuai Jiao and some kickboxing.

Now if one would watch modern mixed martial arts shows like the UFC, one would see one of the most famous Japanese grappling styles being used very often. This is none other than Jiu Jitsu and has been used as one of the main weapons in the UFC. Now this would involve bringing the opponent down to the ground in order to make him tap out.

Even Mexico had their own form of this combat art known as the Lucha Libre. Now as compared to traditional grappling, this Mexican form made use of a lot of high flying moves wherein one would jump from the ropes or the posts to create damage. This actually became more of an entertainment medium rather than an actual combat art.

Now if one would watch the WWE or TNA, he could see that this art has really changed over the years. During the old days, grappling was a way of life and a way of self defense. Now, it is more like a sport that people compete in to gain titles.
